Pre-Revolution History

This brand did not exist before the Revolution.

Before the Revolution there existed a brand called ”Trinidad”, produced by ”Trinidad y Hermanos”, which continued to manufacture mainly cigarettes up to 1958.

The pre-Revolution Trinidad brand was named after a person. The present Trinidad brand was named after a famous historical city in Cuba. The two brands are completely unrelated.

Post-Revolution History

The Trinidad brand was created around about the same time as the Cohiba brand, Cohiba in 1966 and Trinidad in 1969. Both brands were used as official diplomatic gifts from the Cuban Government to foreign ambassadors, politicians, etc.

President Castro never used Trinidad for his personal gifts. He always used the Cohiba brand. He explained this in an interview by Martin Shanken of Cigar Aficionado Magazine in February 1994.

The Cohiba brand was made available on the international market in 1982 and the Trinidad brand in 1997.

Trinidad was a quite mysterious brand before it was made available to the general public in 1997.

At the start, there was only one size of Trinidad: Fundadores. In 2003 three more sizes, the Reyes, the Coloniales and the Robusto Extra, were added to the range.

At the same time, Trinidad’s livery and its cigar band were updated to recognize the prestige that the brand commanded. Most recently, in 2009, the Trinidad Robusto T was introduced to complement the brand’s range. For several years Trinidad was made at El Laguito, the Cohiba factory, where its uniquely fragrant and aromatic, medium flavored blend of filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone was developed.
