In recent years, social media has proven time and again its ability to influence and spread trends across the globe. From viral challenges to unveiling industry secrets, platforms like Twitter have played a significant role in amplifying these phenomena. However, as of late, TikTok has emerged as a new hotbed for trends and their wide-scale dissemination. One particular trend that gained traction last year was the “Kia Challenge,” which showcased how to bypass the anti-theft immobilizers in certain Hyundai and Kia models. Unfortunately, this trend led to an alarming increase in vehicle thefts, leaving countless owners as victims and prompting a race to address the security vulnerabilities.
In response to this troubling situation, Hyundai has taken steps to rectify the issue by offering a settlement for more than 9 million affected Hyundai and Kia vehicles. The settlement, valued at a substantial $200 million USD, aims to compensate owners who suffered losses or damages from theft incidents not covered by insurance. Furthermore, reimbursement for anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks and alarm kits will also be provided to enhance vehicle security.
While the settlement is being implemented, it is important to note that ongoing lawsuits related to these security flaws are still likely to proceed to court.
