Crafted in Tampa over a century ago, these cigars offer a unique glimpse into the rich history of cigar making.
The Vintage Collection’s Unique Characteristics
Drew Newman, representing the J.C. Newman Cigar Company, enthusiastically shares the details: “These vintage Tampa cigars vary in size. We have some longer, others with tapered heads, and a few rounder ones featuring darker tobaccos.” A local cigar shop customer in Plano, Texas, stumbled upon this box, leading back to the 1906 debut of the Ponce De Leon brand by Cuesta Rey Cigar Company, later acquired by Newman in 1958.
Tampa’s Rich Cigar Heritage
Newman highlights Tampa’s cigar-making legacy: “A century ago, cigar makers here exclusively used Cuban tobacco. This collection features dark, Cuban tobaccos, shipped from Havana and hand-rolled in the Cigar City.”

The box itself, used by salespeople to display these cigars across America, stands out for its size, ornate design, sturdy handle, and protective features. It reflects the era’s approach to cigar salesmanship and marketing.

Newman explains the Ponce De Leon brand’s prestige, noting its premium status with a price of five cents per cigar. He emphasises the historical importance of these cigars, choosing to preserve them as invaluable artifacts rather than consume them.
