A Historical Auction
In a remarkable turn of events, a rare box of Winston Churchill’s iconic cigars has been auctioned for nearly £16,000 in Massachusetts. This news excites collectors and offers a unique look into the life of Britain’s famed wartime leader.
Churchill and His Cigars
Churchill’s love for ‘La Corona’ cigars was well-known. They were more than a habit; they symbolized his fortitude. In 1940, Samuel Kaplan, a New York businessman, began supplying these Cuban cigars to Churchill. Each had a band with the Prime Minister’s name, marking a gesture of solidarity in challenging times.
The Cigars’ Journey
These Cuban cigars, made by Álvarez López y Cía, are not just tobacco. They are pieces of history. Each features Churchill’s name on a distinctive red band. Starting with an estimate of £6,983, the auction closed at an impressive £15,743. The backstory adds value: they were gifts to a wartime attendant of Churchill between 1940 – 1945.
The Auction’s Significance
Bobby Livingston of RR Auction highlights the cigars’ importance in Churchill’s image. Known for smoking up to ten a day, Churchill’s cigar became his trademark. This auction offers enthusiasts a chance to own a piece of history.
