A unique piece of history is about to hit the auction block as a cigar smoked by Sir Winston Churchill almost 80 years ago has been discovered and will be sold to the highest bidder. Known for his affinity for cigars, the legendary wartime leader often bestowed them upon individuals who had assisted him during his illustrious career.

This particular half-smoked cigar holds immense historical value as it was gifted by Churchill to Hugh Stonehewer-Bird, a consul general in Rabat, Morocco. After hosting a memorable dinner party for the prime minister on August 29, 1944, Stonehewer-Bird carefully preserved the cigar in a glass jar, treasuring it until his passing in 1973. Now, his family has decided to part ways with the cherished artifact, offering it for auction.

Hansons Auctioneers, based in Derbyshire, will present the cigar to eager collectors on June 16, with an estimated price range of £600 to £900. The owner of the auction house, Charles Hanson, expressed his excitement, remarking on the significance of the find and its connection to one of Britain’s most renowned prime ministers and the events of World War II.

Churchill’s reputation as a cigar connoisseur and his generosity in bestowing them upon deserving individuals have resulted in the preservation of such items over the years. In this case, the glass jar has impeccably safeguarded this artifact for nearly eight decades. The cigar’s provenance is further confirmed by an original handwritten label, adding to its appeal for collectors.

Sir Winston Churchill, who served as prime minister from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955, passed away in January 1965 at the age of 90. His funeral was a solemn affair, as he was one of only three British political leaders to receive a state funeral, a testament to his enduring impact on the nation.

The upcoming auction presents an extraordinary opportunity for history enthusiasts and collectors alike to acquire a tangible piece of Sir Winston Churchill’s legacy. As the gavel falls on June 16, it will mark the beginning of a new chapter for this remarkable cigar, continuing its journey through time.
